  • Riders unsure of proper tree width or seat size

What We Evaluate During a Fitting

Each saddle fitting includes assessment of:

  • Tree width and bar angle

  • Shoulder clearance and movement

  • Saddle balance front to back

  • Rider seat position and alignment

  • Pad interaction and thickness

  • Pressure distribution patterns

  • Cinch size

If a saddle from our inventory fits appropriately, it is available for purchase but a list of what to look for will also be given as purchase is not necessary. We carry both new and used western saddles and can also assist with custom ordering when appropriate.

What You Need to Prepare

Before your scheduled fitting:

  • Horse must be clean and dry

  • Safe, level area available for saddling and evaluation

  • Current saddle and pads available (if applicable)

If your horse requires handling precautions, please communicate that in advance so safety can be ensured and more time can be allotted.

Budget Expectations

While purchasing is not required, many riders book fittings while actively shopping.

Typical pricing ranges:

  • Quality Used Western Saddles: Starting around $1,000+

  • New Saddles: Vary by brand

  • Custom Saddles: Starting around $4,500+

We focus on fit and safety first, brand second.

After the Fitting

You will receive a written report outlining:

  • Saddle fit findings

  • Recommended saddle brands and types

  • Seat size guidance

  • Equipment suggestions (pads, cinches if applicable)

If a suitable saddle is not available at the time of fitting, we may notify you if one arrives that matches your documented fit profile.

Why Proper Western Saddle Fit Matters

Improper tree shape and saddle balance are among the most common causes of:

  • Movement restriction

  • Back soreness

  • Rider imbalance

In our evaluations across Ontario performance and recreational horses, incorrect tree shape, width and rock, remains the most frequent issue identified.

Saddle fit should be based on structure and movement.

Saddle Fitting FAQ's

Why should I book a saddle fitting?

There are lots of saddles on the market today, fitting takes the guesswork out of finding a saddle. During the appointment, the goal is finding the solution that allows your horse to move freely and without pain. Any horse that is doing work, starting work or has any changes in body/ lifestyle can benefit from regular saddle fittings.
Annual or semi annual saddle fittings are part of a preventative maintenance program for your horse.

Can you fit me for an English saddle?

No, unfortunately we do not offer English saddle fitting.

My horse has never had a saddle on, can I still book a saddle fitting?

Of course! Although it does make the process less stressful for the horse and the owner if the horse is familiar with tack so if you can practise prior to your appointment, please do.

My horse is difficult, might bite or kick, will you still come out for a saddle fitting?

Within reason, yes. Please take every precaution to ensure your own and our safety. In extreme cases, it might be a good idea to have a friend help you in the barn for the fitting.

My horse is very cinchy, would a different saddle or cinch help?

A great fitting saddle, pad and cinch can make a world of difference to any horse and rider but we also recommend that you reach out to your veterinarian to ensure there are no underlying health concerns, ideally prior to your saddle fitting.

Will you bring different western saddles to the fitting? If one fits my horse, can I buy it?

We will bring several different saddles to the fitting for the main goal of trying and discussing benefits of certain saddle fits. These, along with pads and cinches, are brought to go over how the whole setup works together for your horse. We always aim to have something suitable to show you but we cannot guarantee that we have a suitable saddle for your horse. And yes, if we bring it, it’s for sale.

Do you sell different brands of saddles?

Yes, absolutely! We sell a wide range of saddles and saddle brands, new and used and can also help you with the process of ordering a custom saddle should you wish.

What should I prepare for your visit?

Please make sure that your horse and tack is ready for us! Please make sure they are inside the barn or at the fitting location and that they are brushed off and dry and ready for tack. If we have to wait for you to bring in the horse from the field and your horse is not dry and ready for tack, please be aware that this will cut into your saddle fitting time, as we will still have to leave when your appointment time is up.

How long is a saddle fitting session?

Between 45-90 mins is the average time spent on a saddle fitting. Please be mindful of the time as we will have to leave at 90 mins in order to not be late for our next appointment. If you wish to test ride a new saddle for example, make sure you do that before we have to leave.

What is in the written report that you offer?

The written report includes the benefits and concerns of the saddles tried, including their current saddle as well as a list of saddles, pads and cinches that will work for your horse.

Why do I have to pay the full fee up front?

This ensures less cancellations and acts as a deposit for your appointment. It also ensures our expenses are covered as we often drive several hundred kilometers in one day and some longer trips means hotel costs have to be taken into consideration.

Will I be charged mileage after your visit?

No, we have changed our pricing structure and the travel fee is now included in the cost of the saddle fitting and paid in full prior to your appointment.

I have a specific budget, can you find my perfect saddle within my budget?

It is a possibility to find the ‘perfect saddle’ within your budget but it largely depends on the horse, rider and the discipline you are riding. If you have a lot of specifics in terms of looks, weight and type; a custom saddle will likely be the only guarantee on getting exactly what you want. If there is some flexibility, there are lots of used options on the market! Good quality used saddles range from $1000 plus, there is the odd one under that. Custom saddles start at $4400 and go up from there.

Will you help me shop for a saddle after the fitting?

Unfortunately, with on average around 75 saddle fittings per month we do not have time to shop for our clients. If a saddle comes into the shop after your fitting that we know would fit your horse we will let you know. If you choose the report, a list will be sent to you with what you are looking for.
